NASA will make history with the Artemis II mission, which will be the first crewed fly-by of the Moon for more than 50 years since the Apollo program. The ambitious Artemis Program mission will demonstrate key capabilities required for subsequent Moon surface exploration and, eventually, exploration of deep space. Artemis II will have astronauts aboard and will orbit the Moon before returning home. This is a critical step towards a lunar colony and even missions to the Red Planet.
Artemis II is the second mission of the Artemis Program and will be the first crewed mission.
Four astronauts will be on board the Orion spacecraft, which will venture beyond low Earth orbit.
It will test the life support, navigation, and deep space communication systems with a human crew.
It will include a flyby of the Moon but not land.
The mission will demonstrate the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket for human spaceflight.
It will take astronauts to a distance of around 370,000 km from Earth, the furthest humans have travelled since the Apollo missions.
It will also test the effects of space travel on human health.
Artemis II will set the groundwork for Artemis III to land on the Moon.
It is a stepping stone to creating a human outpost on the Moon.
It also strengthens international collaboration in space exploration efforts.

The Artemis II is NASA's first human deep space mission in over 50 years. This is the first manned flyby of the Moon in 53 years and is essential for technology and human safety testing. It paves the way for future lunar exploration and human presence, bringing us closer to building a permanent space presence outside of Earth and to Mars exploration.
