The Paralympics team from India created history in Paris by winning a record-tying 29 medals, including 7 Gold Medal, 9 Silver Medal, and 13 Bronze Medal.
A record 84 Para-athletes from India competed in the Paris 2024 Paralympics held in the French capital between August 28 and September 8. India competed in twelve events, up from nine in Tokyo 2020. At Paris 2024, Indian Para-athletes competed in three new sports: blind judo, Para rowing and Para cycling.
The Paralympics Games in Paris in 2024 saw several outstanding performances from India.
Dharambir bagged the gold and Parnav Soorma the silver in the men's club throw F51 for a historic first-ever one-two finish for India in athletics. The winner also improved his Asian record to 34.92m. Later, Praveen Kumar won the T64 high jump title and recorded an Asian mark en route to earn India their sixth gold medal at the Paralympics—higher than the best so far.
Even in archery, records fell by the wayside. In the ranking round, armless archer Sheetal Devi briefly set a new world record before finishing second. But later, pairing up with Rakesh Kumar, she won the compound mixed team qualification with a world-record score. With Rakesh, Sheetal, just 17-year-old then, won bronze in the mixed team to become the youngest medallist from India ever.
India won 29 medals in total in five different sports, and with 17 medals, track and field events had the lion's share to prove the country's supremacy in athletic sports. In a competition dominated by China in almost all fronts, great performances from their athletes positioned India in the top 20 in the overall medal standing at the Paris Paralympics. A bulk of the contribution to India's stellar medal tally came from the triumph of its contingent in track and field events.
