Recently, Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve, located in Madhya Pradesh, was approved as the 54th Tiger Reserve in India. It has also become the seventh Tiger Reserve of Madhya Pradesh. The total 54 tiger reserves in India stretch 75,000 sq km. As of now, 80% of the tigers in the world reside in India. According to the Tiger Census, the count of tigers in India increased from 1,411 tigers in 2006 to 3,682 tigers in 2022 (as of 29 July 2023). In this article, we will share the list of 54 Tiger Reserves in India, Project Tiger, and many more.

About Tiger:

  • Scientific Name: Panthera tigris

  • Family: Felidae family of cats

  • International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN): Endangered

  • Wild Life (Protection) Act (WPA): Schedule I

  • Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (Cites): Appendix I

  • Sub-Species of Tiger: As of now, there are eight sub-species of tiger, out of which 3 species of tigers have been extinct.

  • Existing species of tigers: Bengal Tigers, Amur tiger (Amur Rivers region of Russia and China, and North Korea), South China tiger, Sumatran tiger, and Indo-Chinese tiger

  • Extinct species of tigers: Caspian tiger, Javan tiger, and Bali tiger

  • Largest tiger reserve in India: Nagarjunsagar Srisailam Tiger Reserve, Andhra Pradesh

  • Smallest tiger reserve in India: Bor tiger reserve, Maharashtra

About 54th Tiger Reserves in India:

  • State: Madhya Pradesh

  • It is also the seventh Tiger Reserve of Madhya Pradesh after Kanha Tiger Reserve, Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, Pench Tiger Reserve, Panna Tiger Reserve, and Satpura Tiger Reserve.

  • It is stretched out of Sagar, Damoh, and Narsinghpur districts of Madhya Pradesh.

  • Area: 2,339 square kilometers

  • Encompassed area: Nauradehi Wildlife Sanctuary and Durgavati Wildlife Sanctuary

  • Rivers: Narmada and Yamuna River basins

  • Fort: Singorgarh Fort

  • Vegetation: Dry deciduous type

About Tiger Census 2022:

  • Released on: July 29, 2023 (Global Tiger Day)

  • As per the Tiger Census 2022, the number of tiger population has been increased to 3,682 in 2022.

  • In April 2023, the number of Tiger population was 3,167, which increased by 6.1% till July 2023.

  • State-wise: With a population of 785, Madhya Pradesh recorded the highest number of tiger population in India, followed by Karnataka (563) Uttarakhand (560), and Maharashtra (444).

  • Tiger Reserve- Wise: With the population of 260, Jim Corbett, located in Uttarakhand, has the highest number of tiger population, followed by Bandipur (150), Nagarhole (141), Bandhavgarh (135), Dudhwa (135).

  • As per the data, Central India and the Shivalik Hills and Gangetic Plains have observed an increase in tiger population, while the Western Ghats showed a decline.

Schemes for Tiger Reserves in India:

In India, numerous schemes were launched to protect the tiger population in India such as Project Tiger, M-STrIPES, Tiger Census, and many more.

1. Project Tiger

  • Launched on: April 1, 1973

  • Launched at: Jim Corbett National Park

  • Aim: To promote the conservation of the tiger

  • Oversees by: National Tiger Conservation Authority oversees Project Tiger (NTCA)

  • This program was started with only 9 Tiger Reserves for conserving India's national animal, Tiger.

2. Tiger Census

  • Initiative of: National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), Wildlife Institute of India (WII), state forest agencies, and NGOs

  • It is held every four-year.

  • It was started in 2006.

3. M-STrIPES

  • It refers to the Monitoring System for Tigers – Intensive Protection and Ecological Status.

  • Launched in: 2010

  • Aim: To increase patrolling and oversight of Bengal tiger, which are critically endangered

What is Tx2?

  • It is a slogan, which was set by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) through the Global Tiger Initiative, Global Tiger Forum, and other critical platforms.

  • It is a global commitment to double the number of wild tigers in the world by 2022.

  • Base year: 2006

  • India Status: India has achieved this target.
