1. Sebi may allow AIFs to exclude certain investors

In the news:

• The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) is planning to mandate the managers of alternative investment funds (AIFs) to exclude certain investors while making investments.
• Reason: To address concerns about the evergreening of loans at the fund level
• Sebi first codified the 'excuse-exclude' norms in April 2023, giving AIFs an option to exclude investors in certain circumstances.
• Through the fresh proposal, Sebi is seeking to convert this discretion into an obligation for AIFs.
• An AIF manager will be required to carry out specific due diligence before each investment by the fund to ensure that it does not facilitate the circumvention of regulations issued by the markets, insurance, or banking regulator.
• Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs)
• AIF is any fund established in India that is a privately pooled investment vehicle that collects funds from sophisticated investors, both Indian and foreign, for investing.
• It pools funds from investors and invests them under different categories of investments as specified by the SEBIfor the benefit of investors.
• These investment vehicles adhere to the SEBI (Alternative Investment Funds) Regulations, 2012.
• AIFs can be formed as a company, Limited Liability Partnership (LLP), trust, etc.
• Categories Of AIF:
• Category I AIFs: They can invest in start-ups, early-stage ventures, social ventures, etc.
• Category II AIFs: They are those which are not classified under Category I or Category III. Various types of funds such as real estate funds, debt funds, private equity funds, funds for distressed assets, etc.
• Category III AIFs: They are funds that employ complex or diverse trading strategies and may employ leverage including through investment in listed or unlisted derivatives hedge funds, PIPE Funds, etc. registered as Category III AIFs.
• Category I and II AIFs are required to be close ended and have a minimum tenure of three years. Category III AIFs may be open ended or close ended.

4. 4 DISCOMs secured A+ rating in the latest CSRD Report for exceptional consumer service

In the news:

• In the latest Consumer Service Rating of Discoms (CSRD) report, four electricity distribution companies (DISCOMs) from Delhi and Uttar Pradesh have achieved the prestigious A+ rating.
• The report was unveiled by Power Minister RK Singh.
• It is a comprehensive evaluation of DISCOMs across the country, aimed at enhancing their accountability towards consumers.
• Out of the 62 DISCOMs evaluated, Delhi emerged as the frontrunner, with three companies securing the top A+ rating. The notable achievers include BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL), BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL), and Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL).
• Noida Power Company Limited (NPCL) from Uttar Pradesh has also earned an A+ rating.
• In rural areas, electricity availability has surged from 12.5 hours in 2014 to an impressive 21-22 hours.

9. JSW group to invest ₹40K crin Odisha for EV production

• Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik-led state cabinet approved a special incentive package for the Sajjan Jindal-led conglomerate JSW Group’s electric vehicle and component manufacturing projects in Naraj, Cuttack, and Paradip.
• It involves a combined investment of ₹40,000 crore and has the potential to create 11,000 jobs.
• The JSW group will invest ₹25,000 crore in an EV battery manufacturing plant and an EV components plant in the first two phases of its plan.
• JSW will invest ₹15,000 crore to set up an EV components manufacturing complex.
• Electric models made up around 2% of car sales in 2022-23 with Tata Motors dominating the market.
• But the government is targeting a 30% share by 2023.

10. Indian army special forces contingent reaches Egypt for joint exercise ‘Cyclone’

• The Indian Army contingent comprising 25 personnel reached Egypt to take part in the 2nd edition of India-Egypt Joint Special Forces Exercise CYCLONE.
• The Exercise is being conducted at Anshas, Egypt from 22nd January to 1st February 2024.
• The first edition of the exercise was conducted last year in India.
• The Indian contingent is being represented by troops from The Parachute Regiment (Special Forces) and Egyptian contingent comprising 25 personnel is being represented by the Egyptian Commando Squadron and the Egyptian Airborne Platoon.

समाचार में:

• भारत-मिस्र संयुक्त विशेष बल अभ्यास साइक्लोन के दूसरे संस्करण में भाग लेने के लिए 25 कर्मियों वाली भारतीय सेना की टुकड़ी मिस्र पहुंची।
• यह अभ्यास 22 जनवरी से 1 फरवरी 2024 तक अंशास, मिस्र में आयोजित किया जा रहा है।
• अभ्यास का पहला संस्करण पिछले साल भारत में आयोजित किया गया था।
• भारतीय दल का प्रतिनिधित्व पैराशूट रेजिमेंट (विशेष बल) के सैनिकों द्वारा किया जा रहा है और 25 कर्मियों वाले मिस्र के दल का प्रतिनिधित्व मिस्र के कमांडो स्क्वाड्रन और मिस्र के एयरबोर्न प्लाटून द्वारा किया जा रहा है।
• अभ्यास साइक्लोन को द्विपक्षीय सैन्य सहयोग विकसित करने और सामरिक सैन्य अभ्यासों की चर्चा और रिहर्सल के माध्यम से दो सेनाओं के बीच बंधन को मजबूत करने के लिए डिज़ाइन किया गया है।
