BHARATPOL Portal: How India’s New CBI Platform Connects Police with INTERPOL

On 7 January 2025, Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah launched the BHARATPOL portal at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. The portal was developed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to help Indian police forces work faster with INTERPOL, the international police organization. In simple words, BHARATPOL gives police officers across the country a single digital window to send and receive requests from police agencies around the world.

The launch is important for students of current affairs and internal security because crime today does not stop at borders. Cyber fraud, drug trafficking, terrorism, and human trafficking often involve several countries, and quick coordination can decide whether a criminal is caught or escapes.

What Is BHARATPOL?

BHARATPOL is an online platform that connects Indian law enforcement agencies, including central agencies and state and Union Territory police forces, with INTERPOL through the CBI. It is accessible through the CBI’s official channels and is managed by the CBI.

The CBI plays a special role here. It serves as the National Central Bureau (NCB) of INTERPOL in India, known as NCB New Delhi. This means that every request that goes to or comes from INTERPOL passes through the CBI. Before BHARATPOL, this communication usually took place through letters, emails, and faxes, which was slow and often unclear for officers working in distant districts.

About INTERPOL

INTERPOL is the International Criminal Police Organization. It helps police forces of its member countries share information and cooperate on crimes that cross borders. India has been a member since 1949. INTERPOL issues color-coded notices to alert police around the world:

  • Red Notice: a request to locate and provisionally arrest a wanted person, usually for extradition
  • Blue Notice: to collect information about a person’s identity or whereabouts
  • Green Notice: to warn about a person who may commit crimes in other countries
  • Yellow Notice: to help find missing persons
  • Black Notice: to seek information about unidentified bodies
  • Orange Notice: to warn about an imminent threat to public safety
  • Purple Notice: to share details of methods used by criminals

It is important to remember that a Red Notice is not an international arrest warrant. It is a request, and each country decides how to act under its own laws.

The Five Modules of BHARATPOL

The portal is built around five main modules. Students should remember all five, as questions are often asked on them.

  1. Connect: This allows Indian law enforcement agencies to work as an extension of the INTERPOL NCB in New Delhi. It creates a secure channel of communication between the CBI and police forces across the country.
  2. INTERPOL Notices: This makes it easier to request and manage INTERPOL notices, including Red Notices, so that action against criminals can be faster.
  3. References: This simplifies the process of seeking and providing international help in investigations, for example, when a police team needs information or evidence from another country.
  4. Broadcast: This lets requests for assistance from INTERPOL member countries reach Indian agencies in real time. At the launch, it was said that requests from 195 countries would be immediately available through this module.
  5. Resources: This offers a place to share documents, templates, and training material so that officers can build their skills in international investigations.

Why India Needed BHARATPOL

The government and the CBI highlighted several needs behind the portal:

  • Speed: Replacing letters and faxes with a digital system saves time, and time is critical in chasing fugitives.
  • Access for field officers: A sub-inspector in a state police station can now reach INTERPOL channels through the system instead of depending on a long chain of paperwork.
  • Better use of notices: Many police units were not using INTERPOL notices fully. The portal aims to increase awareness and use.
  • Fighting new types of crime: The portal is designed to help in cases of organized crime, narcotics trafficking, illegal migration, cybercrime, economic fraud, child exploitation, and terrorism.
  • Bringing back fugitives: The Home Minister said that BHARATPOL, along with India’s three new criminal laws, will help in catching fugitives who flee abroad and make extradition and justice more efficient.

How It Helps the Police in Practice

Imagine that a state police team is investigating a financial fraud, and the accused has moved to another country. Earlier, the officer might have had to send a request through several offices before it reached INTERPOL. With BHARATPOL, the team can use the portal to ask for a notice or international assistance and track the request, while the CBI reviews and forwards it. Similarly, if a foreign police agency needs help from India, the request can reach the right Indian agency quickly through the Broadcast module.

Early Results

Within about a month of its launch, the portal had already handled 16 requests for INTERPOL notices, 8 references seeking help from foreign agencies, and 30 requests received from international agencies. These early numbers, reported in February 2025, show that officers had started using the system. Students should treat them as early figures, since usage would change over time.

Police Medals at the Launch Event

At the same event, Amit Shah presented police medals to 35 CBI officers. These included the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service and other awards recognizing excellence in investigation. This part of the event shows the government’s focus on both technology and the people who use it.

Challenges to Watch

A portal alone cannot guarantee results. Training for thousands of officers, data security, quick replies from foreign agencies and proper legal follow-up are all needed. Extradition also depends on the laws and courts of the country where a person is located, so cases can still take a long time.

Quick Facts for Exams

Conclusion

BHARATPOL marks a shift from paper-based, slow communication to a secure digital platform for international police cooperation. For students, it is a good example of how technology and law enforcement can work together to tackle transnational crime.
