  • It was first released in 2012.

  • It is released on March 20th, as part of the International Day of Happiness celebration.

    • Finland (for the 6th consecutive year)

    • Denmark

    • Iceland

    • Israel

    • Netherlands

  • Worst Performers:

    • Afghanistan was ranked as the unhappiest nation, followed by Lebanon, Sierra Leone, Zimbabwe, respectively.

  • India’s Performance:

    • India ranks at 126th position out of 136 countries.

    • It even lags behind its neighbouring nations like Nepal, China, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

  • Methodology is based on 6 factors:

    • Social support,

    • Income,

    • Freedom,

    • Generosity, and

    • Absence of corruption

7. Electoral Democracy Index 2023

  • Released by:  V-Dem Institute at Sweden’s University

  • There are 5 indexes used by V-Dem to capture democratic values in India.

  • Deliberative Democracy Index: It measures political decisions are made through public reasoning or emotional appeals and coercion.

  • Egalitarian Democracy Index: Examines equal access to rights and liberties.

  • India ranked 123 on this Index.

  • Electoral Democracy Index:  Evaluates election cleanliness and lack of fraud.

  • India’s ranking dipped from the 100 in 2022 to 108th in 2023 in this Index.

  • Liberal Democracy Index (LDI): Protection of individual and minority rights against State tyranny.

    • India ranked 97th in LDI.

  • Participatory Democracy Index: Measures active citizen engagement in electoral and non-electoral political processes.

8. SIPRI report 2023

  • Released by: Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI)

  • Highlights:

    • India had the biggest percentage of the world’s arms imports in the past five years at 11%, followed by Saudi Arabia (9.6%), Qatar (6.4%), Australia (4.7%), and China (4.7%).

    • In the past five years, the US exported 40% of all military goods worldwide, followed by Russia (16%), France (11%), China (5.2%), and Germany (4.2%).

    • From 2013–17 and 2018–22, American armament exports increased 14% while those of Russia decreased 31%.

    • India imported 37% fewer goods from Russia.

9. Literacy rate in India 2023

  • Released by: Ministry of Education

  • Highest literacy rate in India:

    • Kerala has the highest literacy rate in India at 94%, followed by Lakshadweep at 91.85% and Mizoram at 91.33%.

  • Lowest literacy rate in India:

    • Bihar (61.8 %), followed by Arunachal Pradesh (65.3 %) and Rajasthan (66.1 %)

  • The literacy rate in rural India is 67.77 per cent as compared to 84.11 per cent in urban India.

10. Global Terrorism Index 2023

  • Edition: 10th

  • Released by: Institute for Economics and Peace

  • This report was first published in 2007.

  • Highlights:

    • Afghanistan is the most impacted by terrorism for the fourth consecutive year.

    • India was listed among countries with a “high” impact of terrorism and ranked 13th.

    • The GTI scores each country on a scale from 0 to 10;

    • Where 0 represents no impact from terrorism and 10 represents the highest measurable impact of terrorism.
