Goa Announces Third District Kushavati: A Historic Development

Goa has formally announced the creation of its third district, named Kushavati, marking a major administrative change in the coastal state. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced that the new district would be created in South Goa and would consist of four talukas, namely Dharbandora, Quepem, Sanguem, and Canacona, with Quepem as the headquarters. The area's cultural heritage and identity are reflected in the district's name, derived from the Kushavati River, which once flowed through the region. The third district of Goa is expected to strengthen governance and the quality of public services while also boosting regional development, particularly among tribal and rural communities.

Future Development Plans for Kushavati

Kushavati is to be built as the aspirational district to enhance the socio-economic performance and government.

  • Being an aspirational district, it will receive supplementary central funds of 15 crores so that it can construct infrastructure and community amenities.

  • Fabrication of administrative facilities will be done; special funds will be sought by the central government in relation to the development of the tribal population in the region, which makes up 27% of the total population.

  • Quepem will be the headquarters of the district, and there will be better transit of buses to nearby talukas such as Canacona and Dharbandora.

  • First, South Goa officials are to administer the district until the necessary infrastructure is prepared.

  • Revenue officers, survey officers, and other administrative positions are being appointed to enhance the government.
