Yu Deng, a mathematician at the University, has been awarded the Fields Medal 2026 for his ground-breaking work in partial differential equations and mathematical physics.
Amongst its other accomplishments, Deng’s work was cited by the International Mathematical Union for the rigorous derivation of the Boltzmann equation from hard-sphere dynamics for rarefied gases; the derivation of wave kinetic equations from nonlinear dispersive systems; and the probabilistic approach to nonlinear Schrödinger dynamics.
