The Staff Selection Commission has published a notice informing of the changes in the exam pattern of the SSC Selection Post. The notice is available on ssc.gov.in. The notice has mentioned that the exam duration for the SSC Selection Post has been altered. Now, the time for each section will be 15 mins. They can't use any additional time for any section. Candidates with a scribe will have 20 mins for each section. The SSC Selection Post Exam Scheme Notice has details about the new exam scheme, section-wise time allotted, subject-wise marks, and more.
Until now, students have had 60 minutes to complete the paper and have been able to allocate their time as they see fit. This allowed them to focus more time on the harder parts and less time on the easier parts.
But in the 2026 Phase 14 exam, this is no longer the case. The test is now broken down, and each section will be timed for 15 minutes. If they exceed the time, the system will lock the section, and students will not be able to return to it. Students will need to be careful with their time and complete questions quickly and correctly.
| Feature | Previous Pattern | New Pattern (2026 Phase 14) |
|---|---|---|
| Total Time | 60 minutes (overall) | 60 minutes (section-wise structure) |
| Time Management | Flexible across sections | Strict section-wise control |
| Section Timing | No fixed time per section | 15 minutes per section |
| Section Switching | Allowed anytime | Not allowed after section time ends |
| Review Answers | Can review all sections anytime | Cannot revisit previous sections |
The new section wise timing in the exam pattern has been introduced by SSC from 2016. This is due to the increasing number of students taking the examination. SSC has introduced this marking scheme for the fair evaluation of paper. Some of the reasons are the following:
More Students: There is a very high level of competition due to the increased number of students. So this helps in controlling it.
Lower Cut Off: Time for each section is limited, which makes it slightly more difficult, and hence, the cut off is lower.
Fair: There is the same time for each section for all students.
Tests Speed & Accuracy: Students need to solve questions fast and accurately in all the sections.
There is no change in SSC Selection Post Phase 14 Syllabus. According to the notice, the only change is the time limit for each section. So, candidates must study from the older syllabus. The SSC Selection Post Syllabus for CBT comprises of four sections. The subjects assess candidate's general awareness, knowledge, mathematical ability and his/her understanding of English language.
