Timor-Leste, the country was officially called East Timor, became the 11th member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on 26 October 2025, the first expansion of the bloc in decades. Its historic accession that was celebrated at the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur is an indication of the increasing role of the country in the process of cooperation and development in the region. The hoisting up of the Timorese flag together with other ASEAN states was a symbol of unity, inclusiveness, and a mutual desire to have peace and prosperity. In the case of East Timor, which gained its independence in 2002, membership is a significant step towards enhancing diplomatic relations, economic development, and helping Southeast Asia to have a collective gain and stability.
