Finance Minister: The government of the State of Meghalaya hosted the groundbreaking event for the Largest Organic Spice Plant in the northeast, propelling the region’s organic agriculture sector forward. It was inaugurated by Union Minister for Finance Nirmala Sitharaman and will strengthen the ecosystem for organic agriculture in the northeastern region. The facility is projected to facilitate value addition and market linkages among organic growers of spices in the entire Northeast Organic region and also enhance export potential. The Northeast’s Largest Organic Spice Plant, being established in Meghalaya, is in accordance with the Government of Meghalaya’s vision of promoting organic farming, boosting farmers’ income and making Meghalaya the hub of organic spices in India.

Meghalaya has played an important role as high value Spices producer, especially Lakadong turmeric and ginger. The favourable climate, rich biodiversity and growing trend of chemical-free farming of the state make it an ideal place for the large-scale organic processing infrastructure.
Besides, the Government of Meghalaya has always been proactive in establishing value addition centres, farmer groups and export promotion schemes, among others. These are all further efforts which are followed by the opening of the Northeast’s Largest Organic Spice Plant at Meghalaya.
