On 31 October of every year, India celebrates National Unity Day, or Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, to honor the birthday of an Indian leader, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. He was central to the nation-building of the Indian Union, which involved uniting more than 500 princely states into the Indian Union soon after independence. In 2014, the Government of India formally introduced the day to renew the power, unity, and sustainability of the nation in defiance of the attacks on its unity, integrity, and security. The event is celebrated by educational institutions and government offices through a ceremony of pledging and national integration activities.
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel is the Iron Man of India, who grew up in a humble background in Gujarat to play a role in uniting India. His effort, passion, and sacrifice in the fight for freedom and integration of the princely states after the independence era had made him an icon of strength, vision, and national integrity.
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was an extremely critical figure in the struggle of India to achieve freedom under the guidance of Mahatma Gandhi.
He became a member of the Indian National Congress and became a well-organised leader.
In 1918, Patel organized the Kheda Satyagraha, which defended the farmers who were denied payment of taxes because of the failure of the harvest.
He was known as the Sardar in the whole nation because he led the Bardoli Satyagraha (1928).
He was a proponent of the Non-Cooperation Movement (1920-22) and the Civil Disobedience Movement (1930), such as the Salt Satyagraha.
During his time as the President of the Indian National Congress, in 1931 (Karachi Session), he proposed the basic human rights and economic reforms.
Patel was arrested together with other Congress leaders during the Quit India Movement (1942).
It is through his leadership that there was a sense of unity, discipline, and mass action in the freedom movement of India.
The National Unity Day 2025 of the 150th Birth Anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel is reminding the country of the unceasing efforts that he dedicated to the unity of the country, its integrity, and nation-building. The idea of One India, Strong India is one of the visions that are still inspiring generations. The festival strengthens the theme of peace, nationalism, and unity on which Patel dedicated his life.
