The Government of Karnataka has declared the formation of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) University, the first Government University focused on artificial intelligence. The establishment of the first Government University specialised in Artificial Intelligence (AI) by the Government of Karnataka is a major milestone in the higher education and technology landscape in India. The idea is to establish a new institution for AI teaching, world-class research and innovation, entrepreneurship and skill development. In addition to the university, the state government will create an AI Hub to promote collaboration between industry, startups, government agencies and academia.
This comes as part of India’s objective of focusing on sustainable development of emerging technologies under the IndiaAI Mission and Karnataka’s move towards becoming one of the top technology and innovation hubs in the country.

India’s first government initiative of forming an AI University was unveiled by the Chief Minister of Karnataka, D.K. Shivakumar who stated that during the Google I/O Connect India 2026 event in Bengaluru. The project aims to ensure that Karnataka emerges as a leader in the field of Artificial Intelligence education, AI research, and responsible development of AI, and to build a digitally prepared workforce for the digital economy.
