A hovercraft (more accurately air cushion vehicle, or ACV) is a high-speed amphibious platform that travels over a hovel of air to the surface under its hull.
Hovercraft, on the other hand, are unique in not being limited to operating over only the water, mudflats, marshes, sandbanks (sandbank), and shallow coastal areas as would be expected of all normal vessels. Therefore, they work great for missions in locations where patrol boats are restricted to operate.
India has a coastline stretching to over 7,500 kilometres including estuarine areas, creeks, mangrove terrain and shallow waters make such systems in demand for the Indian Coast Guard. As such, the entry of indigenous hovercraft will considerably strengthen coastal response capabilities.
