Kerala is opening the first underwater tunnel in its history, which is a pioneering project between Fort Kochi and Vypin. The twin-tube tunnel will be approximately 35 metres beneath the sea, which will relieve the congestion of traffic and lessen the travel distance of 16 km presently to just 3 km, which will benefit the project and cost an estimated 2.672 crore and will be ready by September 2027. The proposed tunnel will enhance the coastal connectivity and urban mobility. It will reduce commuting time and fuel costs of thousands of daily commuters once it is operational, and this will be a significant measure in the progress and development of infrastructure and modernisation of transport systems in Kerala.
