1. Chinese naval fleet docks at Bangladesh port 

Trade Relations

China as Bangladesh’s Largest Trading Partner:

• It has risen to $18.3 billion of trade by the end of 2022.

• Major Exports from China: Machinery electronics and textiles.

• Bangladesh’s Trade Deficit: This has made a large imbalance come up especially due to overdependence on imports from China.

• Bangladesh’s Exports to China: Crude materials, textiles, and agricultural goods mostly.

Relevant for:

Specialised New Industrialised Zones (SNIZ)

Bangladesh’s Role in BRI:

• Initiated in 2016 as one of the Belt and Road initiatives which are China’s drive to expand its infrastructure across the world.

• Major Projects in Bangladesh: Under BRI, various projects are being funded and being construction includes Padma Bridge, Karnaphuli Tunnel and Power plant etc.

• Strategic Significance: Improves transportation links and boosts economic development while holding negative implications for Bangladesh’s reliance on debt to China.

Infrastructure Development

China’s Contributions:

• Involvement in several major infrastructure projects in Bangladesh, including:

• Padma Bridge: One of the organisation’s most important projects addressing internal communication.

• Karnaphuli Tunnel: The first tunnel beneath river in South Asia.

• Power Plants: Various energy works that have been embarked on to enhance power supply in Bangladesh as follows.

Military Relations

Defense Cooperation:

• Military equipments including submarines, fighter aircrafts and naval ships are also imported in Bangladesh from China.

2. The Israeli-Lebanon Conflict and the function of UNIFIL

UNIFIL Peacekeeping Mission

Background of Conflict:

• UNIFIL’s operation is in southern Lebanon to ensure that there is no aggression between the Israel Defense Forces and Hezbollah.

• Later in August 2006 during the attack by the Hezbollah on Lebanon, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) tanks opened fire at the UNIFIL gate and violated the base..

UN Peacekeepers

India’s Role:

• India is third largest contributor to the UNIFIL force with 903 soldiers in the mission currently.

• Nonetheless, there was no Indian officer even posted at the Ramyah camp where the leakage took place.

Breaches of the international law

UN’s Stance:

• UNIFIL deplored the transgression as prohibited by international law governing armed conflict and by resolution 1701 of the UN Security Council.

3. SpaceX Achievements

Rocket Booster Reusability for SpaceX

Technological Breakthrough:

• “Chopsticks” let SpaceX catch a 70.5m rocket booster in mid-air – the firm’s key reusability tech.

• This is a way towards fully reusable rockets, something that is inherently necessary in order to significantly decrease the cost of space exploration.

Elon Musk’s Vision

Multi-Planetary Ambitions:

• According to Musk, humans should have multiple planets to live in and reusable rockets will ensure people go to space and explore the Moon and Mars.

• This is because SpaceX’s work is a giant step towards making space travel more frequent and affordable, interplanetary travel.

NASA-SpaceX Collaboration

Artemis Missions:

• NASA has sunk $4bn into SpaceX and its Starship technology which will help with future Moon and Mars trips.

• Strategic Importance: NASA partnership with SpaceX is an excellent example of how private-public partnership is becoming key in space sectors.

4. Leh Ladakh Northern Lights

One of the Rarest Forms of Aurora Borealis

Geomagnetic Storm:

• Leh-Ladakh witnessed an arcticatorial aurora borealis the first time on October 10, 2024 due to the Geomagnetic storm caused by a coronal mass ejection from the Sun.

Causes of Auroras

Solar Wind Interaction:

• Auroras are formed when charged sector of the Sun’s atmosphere (solar wind) comes in contact with Earth magnetosphere.

• The interplanetary medium is made of charged particles and this bumps on gases in the ionosphere to form the light in the sky.

Colors of Auroras:

• Oxygen emits green hues.

• Nitrogen gives blue and Purple colour lines.

Solar Flare and CME impact

Geomagnetic Storms:

• And through CME’s enhanced solar wind particles, which in turn cause geomagnetic storms that allow the aurora to extend closer to more latitudes outside the poles.
