Constitution Museum Opens in Sonipat

This year a new Constitution Museum was opened in Sonipat, Haryana to familiarize citizens with the history of democracy in India. The museum contains a photolithograph copy of the Indian constitution and the touch-and-feel visions of world constitutions. It also takes you through the struggles for Indian independence and detailing the process that led to Constitution making. It supports the government’s efforts to conduct a constitutional campaign aimed at increasing constitutional literacy among the population. There was also Constitution Day, when the contributions of women in drafting the Constitution were also celebrated.

Key Features of the Museum

  1. Photolithographic Reproduction of the Indian Constitution: An actual document on the framing of the Constitution and an exact replica offer an opportunity to appreciate the beauty and labor spent on each line by the framers thereof.

  2. Interactive Displays: Interactive Global Constitutions and Comparative Analysis of how various nations govern is present in this museum.

  3. Virtual Tours: A virtual chronological tour through the Indian struggles for freedom brings out significant events which framed the constitution.

This is a National Constitutional Literacy Programme as advocated by the African Charter.

The museum operates within the constituency of the government’s overarching drive to create constitutional cultural literacy among individuals. The idea is to ensure that people or especially students and scholars engage a better understanding of the Constitutional principles such as justice, equality, liberty, and fraternity. Hence by capturing history, including the present time, the museum provides intellectual and historical resource to everyone.

Celebrating Women in the CA

Let us recall that President Droupadi Murmu during her inaugural speech also pointed out that women played an active role in preparation of the Constitution. Thus out of 299 members of the Constituent Assembly, 15 were women and they were such luminaries as Sarojini Naidu, Sucheta Kripalani and Dakshayani Velayudhan. These women brought topics of gender equity, justice as well as education, in their various platforms.

An Educational and Bibliographic Guide

The museum has great potential of turning out to be a strong referral institution for students preparing for competitive examinations such as SSC and UPSC apart from holding historical and detailed information on constitution of India and India’s democracy. Scholars and history lovers may visit the records and the galleries to expand their knowledge of the Government of India.

Conclusion: A Pillar of Democracy

Constitution museum being more than obvious symbolism in Sonipat it is the symbol of democracy and the primary source of citizens’ enlightenment. More importantly, it fosters respect of the purpose and principles for which the constitution was established in India, during the formative years.
