To increase gender sensitivity in the CISF, the Home Ministry has cleared the formation of the first women’s battalion in the central paramilitary force. This venture will go a long way in improving the demographic standing of women in CISF since currently, they only account for 7% of the overall size of 1,77,000 strong force. The verdict will be a historic step in the process of women’s liberation within the nation’s military forces.
The CISF is the organisation that was raised following the Central Industrial Security force Act 1968 and its main work is to secure India’s strategic assets like airports, metro systems, nuclear power stations and other large industries. It also has responsibilities in case of terrorism, natural disasters and defense of important assets. The formation of an all women battalion will enhance the force multifaceted and show the other paramilitary organizations in the country how it is done.
The women personnel in this battalion shall be trained intensively and to a professional level for the security sensitive assignments such as VIP security, protection of sensitive facilities and operations, and militant related securities. This training will build proficiency into managing new age security threats so that the battalion is ready to work at optimum level in pressure conditions to enhance the safety of the country.
This decision forms one of the strategies that the Indian government has implemented relating to the launching of gender equality across industries, the armed forces, and defense departments. They complement current trends in many parts of the world where power and operational positions in the formerly male-dominated segments are being filled by women.
Forming the all-women CISF battalion not only strengthen this countries stance in gender equality but also mark a new and positive direction to acknowledge women as capable of securing important institutions.
