India Witnesses Rapid Surge in Ultra-Processed Food Consumption

The market for ultra-processed food has been growing rapidly in India. Retailer sales were below US$1 billion in the mid-2000s, but by 2019, it reached nearly US$38 billion. According to official health and nutrition reports, UPFs grew at a CAGR of over 13 per cent between 2011 and 2021, making up more than a third of the country's processed food sector. By 2024, the market value had surpassed 2.5 lakh crore, with forecasts showing it could soar to nearly 4 lakh crore in the next five years. This sharp rise indicates changing lifestyles, intensive advertising, and increasing reliance on convenience foods among consumers.

What are Ultra-Processed Foods (UPFs)?

Ultra-Processed Foods (UPFs) are industrially processed food items that are prepared using additives, refined ingredients, preservatives, flavour enhancers and artificial colours. They are processed through several stages, and they have hardly any whole foods. Examples are packaged snacks, sweetened beverages, instant noodles, pre-cooked meals and processed desserts. These are foods which have a long shelf life, convenience, and high taste.

Reasons for Surge in UPF Consumption

  • The cities are also experiencing rapid urbanisation, which is fuelling the need to have fast and convenient foods.

  • The increase in disposable income makes a greater number of consumers purchase packaged and ready-to-eat foods.

  • Hectic schedules and the need to change ways of life lead to increased attractiveness of processed snacks and ready meals.

  • The increased retail penetration, such as modern trade and e-commerce, increases the supply of UPFs in India.

  • Food companies market and advertise ultra-processed food as appetising and fashionable with aggressive marketing efforts.

  • UPFs have a longer shelf life and are easy to store, thus making them convenient to consumers and retailers.

Conclusion

The increasing consumption of ultra-processed foods in India is a manifestation of changing lifestyles, increased availability of ready-to-eat foods, and the shift in consumer needs. Although the market keeps growing at a high rate, the trend creates a necessity for more awareness regarding nutrition, balanced nutrition as well as healthier options. Informed choices will be very important in influencing the long-term population health as UPFs become more common.

Hayli Gubbi Eruption Raises Regional Alert Across Ethiopia and Neighbouring Nations

Long-dormant Hayli Gubbi volcano seems to have come to life in Ethiopia, thus marking a significant geological occurrence in this country. The volcano was located in the Northern part of the country and had been extinct since the Holocene period, which makes the possibility of this volcano suddenly becoming active not only astonishing but also essential to the scientists who are investigating the tectonic and volcanic development of the area. The eruption provides uncommon knowledge on the reactivation of the volcanoes of the East African Rift System and poses significant questions regarding volcanic hazards and monitoring in the future.

Highlights of Hayli Gubbi Volcano

  • Location: Hayli Gubbi is found in the North Ethiopia, in the East African Rift System.

  • Nearest neighbouring countries: Eritrea and Djibouti are the neighbouring countries to the north and northeast, respectively.

  • Type of eruption: It is thought that the volcano resulted in a strombolian-to-effusive eruption that is characteristic of rift-zone magma.

  • Dormancy: It is said to have been in the dormant state for almost 10,000-year years, and therefore, the recent one is of high interest.

  • Geological importance: The eruption gives some important information on how the Holocene volcanoes in the East African Rift have been reactivated.

  • Hazard potential: Its resurrection indicates the need to establish better volcano monitoring and risk evaluation in the area.

Conclusion

The occurrence of the Hayli Gubbi volcano eruption about 10,000 years and it has increased the level of alert within Ethiopia and its neighbouring countries. This geological anomaly highlights the need to monitor at all times in the East African Rift, where slumbering systems may transform into active systems, culminating in an unanticipated eruption. Strong surveillance, prevention, and scientific studies will be necessary to evaluate the threats and protect the communities in the area.

BEL and Safran JV to Manufacture HAMMER Missiles in India

India and France have agreed to produce together the HAMMER (Highly Agile Modular Munition Extended Range) missile, which will reinforce the long-standing defence relationship between the two countries. Indian collaboration with Safran and Dassault Aviation of France assists in making these work closer contacts between DRDO and HAL of India in order to facilitate the local production of this precision-guided air-launched weapon in India. The project supports the objectives of Make in India and India, as well as enhancing manufacturing confidence through the goal of self-reliance, while increasing the manufacturing of high-end products. On the part of France, the alliance strengthens France as a major technology provider and strategic partner. The project will likely increase the operational preparedness of the modern fighter fleet of the Indian Air Force.

What is the HAMMER Weapon System and Objective?

  • The HAMMER (Highly Agile Modular Munitions Experts Reaching) is a precision strike, air-launched missile.

  • It is programmed to strike long-range targets, where an aircraft can strike a high-value target miles away.

  • The munition has a modular warhead, allowing it to change the mission profile (e.g., anti-infrastructure, soft-target strikes).

  • It has sophisticated guidance systems so that it can be accurate over a long distance.

  • HAMMER is highly manoeuvrable, and it can be used against both stationary and moving targets.

  • The system increases the efficiency of air-to-ground strike and fosters an increase in strategic flexibility.

India-France Defence Cooperation Objective

  • On 24 November 2025, the agreement of the joint venture was signed accordingly.

  • In 2025, Aero India was the venue for the signing of an initial MoU of the collaboration on 11 February 2025.

  • The value of the cooperation is the HAMMER – Highly Agile Modular Munition Extended Range system.

  • It was promoted by BEL CMD Manoj Jain and SED EVP Alexandre Ziegler.

  • The JV will be in the form of a private limited business venture of equal 50:50.

  • Indenisation of production to a maximum of 60 per cent is targeted in the project.

  • It is to be used on Rafale and LCA Tejas aircraft.

Conclusion

The agreement between the BEL and Safran to produce HAMMER missiles in India represents a significant step towards boosting self-reliance in defence. By combining Indian manufacturing capabilities with French technological expertise, the project enhances the production capacity of the local industry, improves air combat preparedness, and strengthens strategic alliances. It positions India more favourably in the realm of sophisticated precision-guided weapons.
