Northeast India’s First Geothermal Production Well: A Step Towards Sustainable Energy

In Northeast India, the Centre for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies (CESHS) has achieved the first Geothermal Production well at Dirang in Arunachal Pradesh, Western Kameng district. This project is state-sponsored and also falls under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, and is one of the steps towards the positive development of energy solutions at high altitude. The recent drilling of a geothermal well in India constitutes part of India’s national trend to explore clean sources of energy as it looks for ways to fight the depleting availability of fossil fuels and the associated high carbon emissions.

Summary:

  • The first geothermal production well in Northeast India has already been drilled in Dirang and will pave the way to a greener future.

  • The project has the collaboration of worldwide and Indian organisations to utilize the geothermal energy of the region efficiently.

About the Project:

  • The Dirang area, as it falls in the medium to high enthalpy geothermal area with around 115°C temperature gradient, and rather promising geology for efficient and low-impact drilling.

  • This project is a multi-company project, where the partners include Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Structures (CESHS), Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI), Icelainic firm Geotropy ehf and Guwahati Boring Service (GBS).

  • It is funded by the government of Arunachal Pradesh and the Ministry of Science and Earth Sciences, Ministry of the Government of India.

  • This has slightly shifted them towards clean and green energy solutions, especially within the high-altitude region.

What is Geothermal Energy?

  • Geothermal energy is the heat energy derived directly and indirectly from the earth surface– geo: earth, thermal-meaning heat.

  • Definition: Geothermal resources are sources of hot water which can be stored naturally or man-made to reach varying temperatures and can be located at different levels beneath the surface of the earth.

  • Uses: Direct uses involve heating buildings directly using the heat from the subsurface and generation of electricity which needs medium to high temperature heat source found in areas of tectonic activities.

  • Advantages:

    • It is cheaper and a reliable source of power since it does not depend on variables such as wind or sun for its source of energy.

    • It can work throughout the year without having to close down.

    • It handles load variations efficiently.

    • It can also serve as a backup power source to renewable and unpredictable power sources such as the solar and the wind power.

Do You Know?

  • Geothermal energy is one of the renewable sources of energy that is available all the times, in form of heat in the surface of the earth as illustrated by the hot springs or geysers.

  • It ensures the maximum utilization of the plant capacity throughout a year.

  • Globally, the United States, Indonesia, Philippines, Turkey and New Zealand are in the lead in this area.

  • India’s Growth can be assessed as follows: According to the Geological Survey of India, the country has the potential of 10 GW.

Applications of Geothermal Energy:

  • Energy generation: Geothermal provides heating and cooling with heat pumps and electricity generation with Geothermal power plants and direct use heat sources.

  • Agriculture: Geothermal energy finds application in fruit, nut, and meat drying, space heating, and controlled atmosphere storage beneficial for agriculture and abode in the high altitude regions.

Concerns:

  • Natural Calamities: High-pressure water injection leads to a couple of minor earthquakes; areas where geothermal energy is located.

  • Huge investment: Drilling and exploration of resources are capital-intensive, hence the cost aspect is a hindrance.

  • Tectonic activities: Potential areas amenable to geothermal development can be in certain geographic areas that are tectonically active.

  • Water scarcity: Issues such as ground settlement, water scarcity, and discharge of some trace gases may occur if the use of the resource is not checked.

Suggestions and Way Ahead:

  • Sustainable energy: The discovery of oil in the North East region have been considered as a great step forward in the search for energy security of India.

  • Low carbon emissions: With this in mind, geothermal energy can be said to have a crucial role in contributing to such a future energy system.

  • Research and innovation: But it requires sustained further research, technological progress, and encouragement from government and other stakeholders for it to be fully realized.

  • PPP model: The application of public and private partnerships will be crucial in reducing the costs of drilling, enhancing the effectiveness of the technology, and incorporating geothermal on a larger scale into societies and economies.

Conclusion:

The recent drilling of the first geothermal production well in Dirang, Northeast India, has brought a novel project towards the realization of the country’s renewable energy. This makes way for more significant applications of geothermal energy in the fight against carbon emissions and in providing clean energy. Yet further increases in research, development of new technologies, and the enhancement of cooperation of government and private entities will also be crucial to India to tackle the difficulties and enhance the use of geothermal energy.

India’s foreign secretary, Vikram Misri, briefed member countries of the UNSC about Indian military retaliation

India’s foreign secretary, Vikram Misri, met envoys from 13 of the 15 member countries of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to apprise them about the Indian military retaliation. To support this claim, the briefing pointed out that the attacks were not aggressive, but rather a reaction to terrorism. India emphasized terrorists such as the Resistance Front (TRF), saying it wants them to be included on the UNSC list of sanctions. Both China and Pakistan did not attend the meeting, but India explained its national security concerns and gave a clear diplomatic condemnation against Pakistan’s role in supporting terrorism. The diplomatic outreach is in sync with India’s velvet-glove diplomacy tactic aimed at putting pressure on Pakistan over its terrorism and terror financing.

Summary:

  • India briefed 13 of the 15 members of the UNSC about its military strikes, stating that they were in retaliation for terrorism and not escalatory.

  • India’s diplomatic steps brought attention to a disturbing development in Pakistan’s approach, where it tried to distance itself from the TRF and called for sanctions against the terrorist groups affiliated with the UN Security Council.

Key Highlights:

India's Stand on Strikes:

  • India also affirmed that the raids conducted on Pakistan were not provocative but in response to the Pahalgam terror attack that was carried out by the Pakistan-based militants.

  • Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri briefed 13 out of 15 UNSC members (excluding China and Sierra Leone) regarding the situation.

Context:

  • The strikes were carried out in retaliation of the Pahalgam terror attack where 26 people were killed.

  • India chose its action to be moderate and proportional and directed towards military assets only.

  • The rationale was to prevent more such acts in future and to act as a preventive measure against other militant groups from Pakistan.

Briefing and Diplomatic Measures:

  • Misri described the strikes as measures against terrorism and not as aggression on the Syrian people.

  • India also highlighted the need to safeguard TRF from the SCN sanctions, as Pakistan tried to play it down.

  • India pointed out how Pakistan tried to dilute the Draft Resolution in the UNSC that would have connected TRF with terrorism earlier this year.

International Reactions:

  • 50 countries were briefed; these were permanent members and 10 non-permanent members, namely France, Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States, Lebanon, South Africa, China, India, Japan, and Vietnam.

  • The U.K. High Commissioner particularly wanted to know about the targeted civilian infrastructure.

First attack in Pakistan’s Punjab since 1971:

  • India conducted Operation Sindoor, with 4 of the 9 strikes targeting Pakistan’s Punjab region, marking the first such attack since the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War.

  • The operation was especially carried out in regions associated with previous major horrific terrorist acts in India, such as the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, the Pathankot attack, the Uri attack, and the Pahalgam attack (April 22).

  • It followed as a major military action after the Pahalgam terror incident took place.

Conclusion:

Concisely and with specific details of the strike by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and the defense, India’s actions were an act of measured response to the Pahalgam terror attack. During bilateral dialogue, India put pressure on the international community for their support on the issue of sanctioning terrorist organizations like TRF, as Pakistan has been attempting to protect them. These were the most strategic of the wars, especially the Operation Sindoor aimed at Pakistan’s Punjab, which demonstrated a strategic counter-terrorism effort by India. This approach ensures the use of force to uproot terrorism while at the same time giving more emphasis on the diplomatic front to ensure collective unity in fighting the menace.

Buffett’s Future Role:

  • However, to ensure some form of stability, Buffett shall cease being the Chief Executive Officer, although he will remain the chairman of the board.

  • Currently, Greg Abel is appointed to head and run the company’s day-to-day management while Warren Buffett will continue to play a supervisory role.

Conclusion:

The recent announcement about Warren Buffett’s retirement from the operational management of Berkshire Hathaway could be described as the symbolic end of an era, but it does not change the fact that the man is considered to be one of the most important investment gurus of recent decades. Being the company that grew his wealth and investment strategies, he parted with a company worth $900 billion, which is now to be steered by Abel. Although the primary managerial challenge for Abel will be sustaining the company’s tradition, it has strong foundations that result from Buffett’s leadership and risk-averse approach to investments.
