Everything you should know about NEET

The National Testing Agency (NTA) organizes the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) annually for entry into undergraduate medical courses in India, such as MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and Veterinary programs. NTA is a government-recognized organization under the Ministry of Education and is completely autonomous in conducting entrance exams in a transparent manner on a large scale. NEET (UG) is also a common qualifying exam for BUMS, BAMS, BSMS, and BHMS courses of Indian medicine and homeopathy respective National Commissions.

NEET (UG) 2026: Exam Date

This year turned out to be a roller-coaster for aspirants. The NTA canceled the original NEET UG 2026 exam, which was to take place on 3 May 2026, after allegations of a leak of the question papers. Following investigations and pressure from the students and parents, the Government of India approved a re-examination of NTA, and NTA finally announced the date of the Re-NEET 2026 exam as Sunday, 21st June 2026.

The good part is students who registered for the original exam were not required to submit a new application, pay a supplemental fee, or choose a new exam location; they were not required to submit a new application; their original registration was still in effect.

NEET Exam Pattern 2026

The Re-NEET 2026 exam was held offline (Pen and paper) in more than 551 cities in India and 14 cities overseas and 22.79 lakh candidates appeared in the exam. A bit of a change for this year, the exam time was 195 minutes (3 hours 15 minutes), which is slightly shorter than the previous 3 hours 20 minutes.

The paper structure is the same as that of previous years, that is, Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology are all made of Section A (35 questions) and Section B (15 questions), with the exception of Biology, which has 360 marks.

Results and Key Numbers

NTA released the NEET 2026 result on July 16, 2026, with 11.21 lakh candidates clearing the test from a total of almost 20 lakh candidates. A positive note: over 58% of the qualified candidates were female and 138 students scored more than 690 out of a total of 720. The paper leak investigation has not been put on hold — the matter has been handed over to the CBI for detailed investigations.

Fees already paid – if you had paid your fees for the cancelled May 3 exam, then there's no need to worry – NTA has confirmed that all fees already paid will be fully refunded.

What Happens Next:  Counselling

The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) will handle 15% All India Quota seats, while individual states will manage the remaining 85% state quota seats. MCC Counselling is tentatively expected to begin in August 2026 and typically runs for about four months across four to five rounds.

Syllabus (Unchanged)

The syllabus structure for Physics, Chemistry, and Biology across Class 11 and 12 remains the same as previous years — covering core NCERT topics like Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Organic Chemistry, Human Physiology, Genetics, and Ecology.

NEET (UG) 2026 will be remembered as one of the most eventful editions of the exam in recent years. What began as a routine national-level test on May 3 turned into months of uncertainty after the paper leak controversy, only to be resolved with a smooth, tightly secured re-examination on June 21. Despite the disruption, the process ultimately delivered — over 11 lakh students qualified, results were declared on schedule, and counselling is set to proceed as planned.
