1. Coral Reef Fossils in Ladakh

In the news:

Recently, Geologists have discovered coral reef fossils at an elevation of 18,000 feet above sea level in the Burtse region, Eastern Ladakh.

Key Points:

• These Coral Reef fossils have revealed the existence of ancient coral colonies.
• It has also provided a glimpse into an earlier unknown geological past of the Burtse region and suggested the presence of a diverse marine ecosystem.
• The discovery of coral reefs also supported the idea that the Himalayas emerged when continental plates were thrust out of the Tethys Sea (about 40 million years ago).
• It also indicates that this region (Ladakh) was once submerged under a vast ocean, which is now a high-altitude desert.

About Coral reefs:

• Coral reefs are underwater ecosystems.
• It is composed of coral colonies, which are held together by calcium carbonate.

Types of Coral Reefs in India:

There are three types of Coral Reefs, existing in India i.e. Fringing reefs, Barrier reefs, and Atolls.

1. Fringing reefs: It is founded near the continent and remain close to the coastline.
2. Barrier reefs: They founded offshore on the continental shelf. The world's Great Barrier Reef found in Australia, which is extended over 2,300 kilometers along the northeastern coast of Australia and also a home to over 9,000 known species.
3. Atolls: They are formed on mid-oceanic ridges.

 

2. Niemann-Pick disease

In the news:

Parents of children, who are suffering from a rare genetic disorder affecting fat metabolism, Niemann-Pick disease have urged the Indian government to include this disease in the National Policy for Rare Diseases.

Key Points:

• This disease refers to a group of inherited metabolic disorders.
• In this disease, abnormal amounts of lipids build up in the brain, spleen, liver, lungs, and bone marrow.
• Lipids refers to fatty materials such as waxes, oils, and cholesterol.

Symptoms:

• Enlarged liver and spleen
• Difficulty in coordinating movement
• Frequent respiratory infections
• Slurred speech

Causes:

• This rare condition is inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern.
• Both gene copies must be faulty to show the disease.

Occurrences:

• This rare disorder affects one in 2,50,000 individuals and it is expensive to treat.

What is the National Policy for Rare Diseases?

• It is a union government initiative.
• It is designed to address and provide support for individuals, who are suffering from this rare and uncommon medical conditions.
• This inclusion of this disease in the government policy (National Policy for Rare Diseases) would provide financial support to eligible patients.

 

3. INS Imphal

In the news:

India’s third indigenous stealth destroyer of the Project 15B class, INS Imphal has been delivered to the Indian Navy by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited.

The INS Imphal was handed over to the Indian Navy four months ahead of schedule.

• INS Imphal is the first warship with accommodation for women officers and sailors.
• It can carry 312 crew.
• Range: 4,000 nautical miles
• It is armed with many missiles such as Brahmos missiles, Barak-8 missiles, and anti-submarine weapons.

6. Pilot project to test E-Rupee for Inter-Bank Borrowing

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has launched a pilot project to test the E--Rupee for Inter-Bank Borrowing.

• Aim: To harness the potential of blockchain technology and digital currency to revolutionize the way inter-bank transactions are conducted in India

10. Standards & Labelling Programme for solar panels

In the news:

The government of India has launched the Standards & Labelling Programme for solar panels, aiming to indicate Quality and Energy Efficiency.

Key Points:

• Launched by: Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE)
• Rating:
  • Under this scheme, the solar panels would be rated on a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 star star-labelled appliance being the most energy efficient one.
• Appliances covered:
  • Presently, under this program, only 34 appliances will be covered.
  • Out of which 15 appliances are under the mandatory regime and 19 appliances are in the voluntary regime
  • The mandatory regime refers to those appliances that cannot be sold in the market without the label.
  • While voluntary regime refers to where the market is in development stage.
• Duration:
  • The labelling will be voluntary for the first two years from January 1, 2024, to December 31, 2025, which means no labelling fee will be charged during this period.
• The government also aims to enhance Solar PV module efficiency by 2% over its existing levels.

मूंगा चट्टानों के बारे में:

भारत में मूंगा चट्टानों के प्रकार:

2. नीमन-पिक रोग

• रोग दिखाने के लिए दोनों जीन प्रतियां दोषपूर्ण होनी चाहिए।

• यह दुर्लभ विकार 2,50,000 व्यक्तियों में से एक को प्रभावित करता है और इसका इलाज करना महंगा है।

दुर्लभ बीमारियों के लिए राष्ट्रीय नीति क्या है?

10. सौर पैनलों के लिए मानक एवं लेबलिंग कार्यक्रम

समाचार में:

भारत सरकार ने गुणवत्ता और ऊर्जा दक्षता को इंगित करने के उद्देश्य से सौर पैनलों के लिए मानक और लेबलिंग कार्यक्रम शुरू किया है।

प्रमुख बिंदु:

• लॉन्च किया गया: ऊर्जा दक्षता ब्यूरो (बीईई)
• रेटिंग:
  • इस योजना के तहत, सौर पैनलों को 1 से 5 के पैमाने पर रेटिंग दी जाएगी, जिसमें 5 स्टार स्टार-लेबल वाला उपकरण सबसे अधिक ऊर्जा कुशल होगा।
• कवर किए गए उपकरण:
  • फिलहाल इस कार्यक्रम के तहत केवल 34 उपकरणों को ही कवर किया जाएगा.
  • जिनमें से 15 उपकरण अनिवार्य व्यवस्था के अंतर्गत हैं और 19 उपकरण स्वैच्छिक व्यवस्था के अंतर्गत हैं
  • अनिवार्य व्यवस्था उन उपकरणों को संदर्भित करती है जिन्हें लेबल के बिना बाजार में नहीं बेचा जा सकता है।
  • जबकि स्वैच्छिक शासन से तात्पर्य उस स्थिति से है जहां बाजार विकास के चरण में है।
• अवधि:
  • लेबलिंग 1 जनवरी, 2024 से 31 दिसंबर, 2025 तक पहले दो वर्षों के लिए स्वैच्छिक होगी, जिसका अर्थ है कि इस अवधि के दौरान कोई लेबलिंग शुल्क नहीं लिया जाएगा।
• सरकार का लक्ष्य सौर पीवी मॉड्यूल दक्षता को मौजूदा स्तरों से 2% तक बढ़ाना भी है।
