1. India removes minimum import price for yellow peas

In the news:

• India removed the minimum import price for yellow peas and allowed shipments duty-free until March 31, 2024.
• Aim: To boost the supply of pulses and keep prices under check.
• 'Import of Yellow Peas' is 'Free' subject to registration under the Import Monitoring system with immediate effect for the period up to March 31, 2024.
• MIP condition and port restrictions shall also not apply ot such Yellow Peas imports till then.
• India imported $0.14 million worth yellow peas in FY23- all from Russia.
• Till now, Yellow Peas imports were restricted and the import required an annual quota, MIP of Rs 200 and above CIF per kilogram, and restriction to Kolkata Sea port.
• Import restrictions did not apply to government commitments under bilateral or regional agreements or Memoranda of Understanding.

2. Assam Cabinet approves census of native Muslims

In the news:

• The Assam cabinet approved a socio-economic survey of the state's indigenous Muslim population.
• The decision comes a year-and-a-half after the Himanta Biswa Sarma government recognised five communities as "indigenous Assamese Muslims".
• The Directorate of Char Areas Development, which will be renamed as Directorate of Minority Affairs and Char Areas, will carry out the socio-economic assessment of "indigenous" Muslims.
• According to the 2011 Census, Muslims comprise more than 34% of Assam's population, the third highest among all states and Union Territories after Lakshadweep and J&K.
• Of the state's total population of 3.1 crore, over 1 crore are Muslims. However, only about 40 lakh are native, Assamese-speaking Muslims, and the rest are Bangladeshi-origin, Bengali-speaking immigrants.
• The state government had categorised Goria, Moria, Jolah (only the ones living in tea gardens), Desi and Syed (only the Assamese-speaking) communities as native Assamese Muslims, who do not have any history of migration from erstwhile East Pakistan and now Bangladesh.
• Unlike the Bengali-speaking migrants, their mother tongue is Assamese and their cultural practices and traditions are similar to native Hindus.
• The Gorias and Morias worked for the Ahom kings and the Desis were originally Koch-Rajbongshis, who converted to Islam.
• Muslims brought by the British from the Chottanagpur plateau to work in the tea gardens comprise the Jolha tribe, while the Syeds are descendants of the followers of Sufi saints.

7. India's forex reserves surpasses $600 billion mark

8. Union Cabinet allocates Rs 2,500 Crore for extended interest Equalisation Scheme

• The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has approved an additional allocation of Rs 2500 Cr for continuation of Interest Equalisation Scheme till 30th June 2024.
• This would help exporters from identified sectors and all MSME manufacturer exporters to avail pre and post shipment Rupee export credit at competitive rates.
• Benefit shall be continued till 30.06.2024 to manufacturer and merchant exporters of the identified 410 tariff lines and to all manufacturer exporters from MSME sectors at rates as specified below:
  • Manufacturer and Merchant Exporters exporting products listed in the 410 tariff lines: 2%
  • MSME exporters of all tariff lines: 3%
• The scheme shall be implemented by RBI through various Public and non-Public Sector banks who provide pre and post shipment credit to the exporters.
• The Scheme is jointly monitored by DGFT and RBI through a consultative mechanism.
