Its historic accession that was celebrated at the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur is an indication of the increasing role of the country in the process of cooperation and development in the region. The hoisting up of the Timorese flag together with other ASEAN states was a symbol of unity, inclusiveness, and a mutual desire to have peace and prosperity.
