It is an initiative to make an inclusive society where people with disability are more empowered and are given equal opportunities and rights. This is celebrated every year globally to make people more aware of the rights of people with a disability and to highlight their achievements.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,;\">President of India to confer National Awards for Empowering Persons with Disabilities to 33 exemplary individuals and institutions on the occasion of International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2024 in New Delhi tomorrow<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,;\">On the occasion, Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Dr Virendra Kumar, will unveil <strong>16 transformative <\/strong><strong>initiatives<\/strong>to enrich the lives of Persons with Disabilities. Some of them are the Kadam Knee Joint in collaboration with IIT Madras &amp;SBMT Bengaluru, the introduction of high-powered spectacles, the inauguration of the \u201cDivyasha\u201d e-coffee table book, Sugamya Bharat Yatra MoU, Braille Book Portal,etc.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<h3 style=\"margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,;\">Background<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,;\"><strong>1992:<\/strong> It was first celebrated in the year 1992 as the UN declared 3rd December as International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2024 (IDPD) to give persons with disabilities their social, political and economic rights and to highlight the challenges faced them and to provide a solution to it.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,;\">2006: An international treaty namedthe Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) was adopted in 2006, which promoted equal rights of persons with disabilities (PWD) globally. This contributed to creatingthe Sustainable Development Goals(SDG) 2030 framework.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,;\"><strong>Theme for 2024: <\/strong>\u201cAmplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<h3 style=\"margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,;\">What is disability?<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,;\">It is a condition in which a person cannot function fully as compared to another person who can function with his full potential. It can be physical, mental, or both. The disability works as a barrier in an individual&#8217;s life as it restricts one\u2019s potential to function compared to others fully.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<h3 style=\"margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,;\">Types of disabilities<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,;\">The most common types of disabilities in India, according to the Census data, include:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,;\"><strong>Locomotor disability<\/strong>: 30.5%<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,;\"><strong>Visual impairment<\/strong>: 19.3%<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,;\"><strong>Hearing impairment<\/strong>: 18.9%<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,;\"><strong>Speech impairment<\/strong>: 5.6%<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,;\"><strong>Mental illness\/disability<\/strong>: 5.6%<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,;\"><strong>Multiple disabilities<\/strong>: 5.5%<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,;\">As per the <strong>Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 (RPwD Act)<\/strong>, the <strong>Government of India<\/strong>recognises<strong>21 types of disabilities <\/strong>to ensure empowerment, equal rights &amp;opportunities&amp; inclusive society. Here is a list of types of disabilities as per the government of India:\u00b7 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<h3 style=\"margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,;\">Data Point<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,;\"><strong>Global Statistics:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,;\"><strong>1 billion people<\/strong> (15% of the global population) live with some form of disability.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,;\"><strong>46% of people aged 60 and above<\/strong> experience some form of disability.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,;\"><strong>80% of PwDs live in developing countries<\/strong>, facing more significant service access challenges.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,;\"><strong>Indian Statistics:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle;\">\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,;\"><strong>2.68 crore<\/strong> (26.8 million) PwDs in India (2.21% of the population per the 2011 Census).<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,;\"><strong>Most common disabilities<\/strong>: Locomotor disability (30.5%), visual impairment (19.3%), and hearing impairment (18.9%).<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,;\"><strong>Higher prevalence in rural areas<\/strong> compared to urban areas.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,;\">Government initiatives like the <strong>RPwD Act, 2016,<\/strong> aim to improve accessibility, education, and employment for PwDs.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3 style=\"margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 566px; height: 356px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.class24.study\/userfiles\/newimages\/Untitled-document-Google-Docs-12-03-2024_03_33_PM.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/h3>\r\n<h3 style=\"margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,;\">Legal rights of PWD<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p style=\"margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,;\"><strong>Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016: <\/strong>This law recognises 21 types of disabilities, including locomotor disability, visual\/hearing impairments, and intellectual disability.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,;\">40% of people are categorised under people with benchmark disabilities<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,;\">5% reservation to children with disabilities with age between 6-28 years for higher education<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,;\">4% reservation for people with disabilities in government jobs<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,;\">Public buildings must be accessible for PWD<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,;\">National &amp; state funds are created for providing financial assistance to PWD<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3 style=\"margin-left: 0in; margin-right: 0in;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,;\">Constitutional Provisions<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"margin-left: 0in;
