This was decided at the 48 UN Committee’s 48th Session in Busan, South Korea.

These sites are listed here as a sign of their exceptional cultural, historical and natural interest. The mountain of Olympus is strongly linked to Greek mythology and to the potential biodiversity of the area, whereas the beaches of D-Day have an important role in reminding people of the liberation of Western Europe during World War II.

Why in News?

Mount Olympus and the D-Day landing beaches of Normandy were recently inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List 2026 during the 48th World Heritage Committee session held in Busan, South Korea.

The decision is significant because the two sites represent very different forms of global heritage:

Mount Olympus represents both natural and cultural heritage.

D-Day landing beaches represent an important historical and cultural landscape associated with World War II.

The UNESCO recognition aims to strengthen the conservation and protection of these globally significant sites.

Mount Olympus Added to UNESCO World Heritage List

Mount Olympus, Greece’s highest mountain, has been officially added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as a site of cultural and natural importance. Its highest peak, Mytikas, reaches about 2,918 metres.

The UNESCO recognition followed a 12-year effort by Greece to secure international recognition for the area. Its inscription acknowledges the outstanding universal value of the wider Olympus region and strengthens the importance of preserving its natural ecosystem and cultural legacy.

The UNESCO recognition is part of a 12-year campaign that Greece has undertaken to win international recognition for the area. The inscription recognises the overall UUV of Olympus and enhances the need to protect the natural environment and cultural heritage of the wider region.

D-Day Landing Beaches Added to UNESCO World Heritage List

The beach landing sites in Normandy, France, on D-Day, the invasion, have also been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. In addition to Pointe du Hoc, there are five Norman beaches—Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword.

These are sites related to Allied landings on 6 June 1944 that led to Operation Overlord, the first stage of the fighting in World War II. The operation was an important part of the Allied campaign to liberate Western Europe from the Nazi occupation.

The UNESCO World Heritage property runs for some 80 km along the coast of Normandy. It is filled with pre-World War II artefacts such as the German Atlantic Wall, artillery batteries, casemates and other remnants of the battle.

Why is UNESCO World Heritage Status Important?

Places with Outstanding Universal Value to mankind get granted UNESCO World Heritage status. This designation helps to encourage international cooperation for their conservation and protection.

In the case of D-Day beaches, recognition is especially significant for conserving physical traces and memories of 1944 events.
