India was welcomed into the podium bonanza at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games 2026 with a spectacular performance by the sportsperson, Lovlina Borgohain, the star boxer of the home side. The Tokyo Olympics bronze winner topped the preliminary list of India’s medals in the Olympic event 75Kg women boxing with a direct entry into the semi-final after a win in the bronze medal bout. Commonwealth Games boxing regulations state that all losers of the semi-finals receive the bronze medals, which will ensure that Lovlina at least gets a spot on the podium before her semi-final at the Crossover World Series of Boxing. One of the reasons for Lovlina Borgohain’s absence from the quarterfinals was that only a few boxers were registered in this category.
