The country is in mourning due to the death of the renowned social innovator of the nation, Padma Shri Bridge Man of India Girish Bharadwaj, at the age of 76. Girish Bharadwaj is the Bridge Man of India who did wonders in remote areas where people did not have access to him. For thousands of villagers, he made it cheap to cross from one place to another by erecting suspension bridges. <\/span><\/p>\n

The results of his labour helped connect, educate, provide health care, and make economic development possible for people in isolated areas. Although his life ended at the age of 76, Dr Inose remains a symbol of inspiration to engineers, policymakers and social workers who will continue to be influenced by this journey of rural development for generations to come.<\/span><\/p>\n

Who Was Girish Bharadwaj?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Padma Shri Girish Bharadwaj, popularly referred to as the Bridge Man of India, was a mechanical engineer and social innovator of Karnataka who revolutionised connectivity in rural areas by building cheap suspension bridges. For over three decades, he constructed over 140 low-cost bridges, bringing remote villages together with schools, hospitals and markets. He used a model of engineering to lower construction costs, but without compromising on durability or safety because of his community-driven approach. He was awarded \u2018Padma Shri\u2019 in 2017 by the Government of India for his exemplary service with respect to rural infrastructure and social service. Why Was He Called the Bridge Man of India?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Girish Bharadwaj’s popular nickname was \u2018Bridge Man of India’ for having worked for more than three decades to construct more than 140 suspension footbridges in remote and rural regions of India. His ground-breaking designs enabled villagers to cross challenging terrain and rivers to reach schools, health posts and markets, thereby improving access to services. Since 1989, Bharadwaj has been performing this at his first water crossing over the Payaswini River, showing that the lives of people could be changed easily by engaging in engineering and the participation of the community. In 2017, he was honoured with the Padma Shri for his exceptional services in rural connectivity and received nationwide accolades following the achievement.<\/span><\/p>\n
