He&#8217;ll also become Secretary of the Department of Military Affairs from when he takes office, the Ministry of Defence said. He will replace Gen Anil Chauhan, whose office is set to expire on May 30, 2026. A highly decorated officer, Lt Gen Subramani has operational and strategic years of Army experience in various leadership roles including Northern Command, Central Command and at the Vice Chief of Army Staff. He is likely to give a further boost to the efforts towards defence modernisation and military integration, theatre commands and repositioning of the military forces in India.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Who Is Lt Gen N S Raja Subramani?<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">N S Raja Subramani has been appointed as India\u2019s new Chief of Defence Staff by the Government of India.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He will also serve as Secretary, Department of Military Affairs, Defence Ministry said.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He will officially induct his name into the office on May 30, 2026, when General Anil Chauhan is relieved of his duties.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Subramani is a retired Brigadier (r) in the Indian Army who has served as a three-star general officer.Subramani, a retired three-star general officer is serving in the Indian Army with four decades of experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He was the 47th Vice Chief Army, formerly, he served as Vice Chief of Army Staff before retiring in July 2025.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The officer is from the regiment of Garhwal Rifles and commissioned in the Indian army in December 1985.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In his career, he was the commander of II Corps of the Indian Army aka &#8220;Kharga Corps&#8221; on the western front.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In addition he also commanded one of the major operational commands of the Army with the appointment of the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Central Command.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lt Gen Subramani served significant roles in Jammu and Kashmir, and along India&#8217;s northern borders.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is said that he is an authority on Pakistan and China related military affairs.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Currently, he is serving as Military Adviser in the Secretariat of the National Security Council.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The CDS is the senior military advisor to the Defence Minister on tri-service issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It also manages the integration of the military, joint planning and theatre command reforms between the Army and the Navy\/Air Force.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lt Gen Subramani as CDS will head the Chiefs of Staff Committee and make sure that the inter-service co-ordinates are effective.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He is a recipient of Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal for distinguished service.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">His leadership will aid in ongoing military modernisation and indigenous defence purchase tasks, defence analysts anticipate.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.class24.study\/current-affairs\/india-nuclear-capable-icbm-test\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">India Conducts Maiden Test<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Conclusion<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The induction of N S Raja Subramani as new Chief of Defence Staff of India is a pivotal change in the Indian military leadership.
